I'm taking the liberty of forwarding this to the list because I belong to
the group, and it's going to be a really good concert.

VOCES NOVAE ET ANTIQUAE presents:
THE ART OF THE MOTET:
TIMELESS SACRED TEXTS IN SETTINGS
BY EARLY AND MODERN COMPOSERS

Voces Novae et Antiquae, Philadelphias professional chorus devoted to
early
and new music continues its 12th season with The Art of the Motet, a
program
of paired early and modern settings of sacred texts to be presented:

Friday, May 14, 2004 at 8 PM
at Trinity Center for Urban Life, 2201 Spruce Street, Philadelphia;

Sunday, May 16, 2004 at 4 PM
at the Samuel Fleisher Art Memorial, 70921 Catharine Street, Philadelphia.

The early settings of Latin hymns and various psalms in Latin, Hebrew and
English include works by Hildegard von Bingen, Josquin DesPrez, William
Byrd, Salamone Rossi, Giovanni Croce, and Lodovico da Viadana. The modern
settings of the same texts represented in the 1st half of the program
include works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Olivier Messiaen, Charles Ives,
Paul Halley (best known as keyboardist for the Paul Winter Consort),
Francis
Poulenc, San Francisco composer Brian Banks, and Robert Ross, Artistic
Director of Voces Novae et Antiquae.

Mr. Ross says of this program: I had the opportunity to work up a similar
program to this one back in 1998 with the Chamber Singers of Franklin &
Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. The program was so well received that I
have been anxious to do something similar with Voces Novae et Antiquae ever
since. Our listeners will be truly amazed at how wide a variety of musical
styles these composers representthe musical influences range from
Gregorian
chant to jazz/rock fusionall in an a cappella context!
