Sorry folks, I saw the message from Wendy and missed the cc to the list. The message was not intended for everyone. Wendy has rescued a few of the gardens near her home, and I was trying to find out if she'd do it professionally, for one of my clients.
As long as I am posting, I thought I'd chime in on the housing reminiscing. I was the 10th of 12 children raised in one of the mid sized homes on the 4300 block of Larchwood. My Parents had a private Bedroom and an Office and the rest of us shared 4 bedrooms. The greatest number of kids in residence at one time was 9, as there was a 30 year spread and the eldest were out before the youngest were born. Even with parents who ran a tight ship, we were hard on the house. Handrails shook loose. Stair walls were finger marked. Appliances were worn out by heavy use. But, there were many good times, and there are lots of life lessons to be learned on line for one of two bathrooms. Pecking order, manipulation, concessions, trades and favors were the coins of the realm. As children we did not add glue strips or nail holes to every wall. Our parents dictated the art. As neighbors, we were noisy, but the noise of supervised children tends to stop at about 9 PM. Also, we could only afford one car at a time, so we weren't consuming more than our share of parking spaces. And, we had chores, the porch, sidewalk and gardens were maintained. If any of us stepped over sidewalk litter, on the way to the house, without picking it up, it would have been noted publicly and with strong disapproval. Daniel Widyono & Richard Hotchkiss not withstanding, in my very long career as a Realtor (31 years, this August) I have learned that almost every tenant thinks they've "improved" the property and almost every owner sees "damage" that is more than "reasonable wear and tear". Both are often wrong. Landlords tend to remember their improvements and expenses and not the areas of neglect. If tenants really made improvements, "make-ready" would be a much smaller industry. I have seen groups (on St. Bernard and Cedar) do more damage in a year than our family of 14 did in 30 years. I know I don't want to ever live next door to a basement band! And, I like parking reasonably close to my own home. So... for myself, I try to honor the zoning codes and I encourage others to do so. Now, if we could just limit family size..... :-) Best!
