I was just down there this weekend, and down in Bethesda/Chevy Chase/Silver Spring there are so many of them that there is this eerie sounds like car alarms going of in the distance... it's everywhere, and it isn't car alarms but billions of cicadas. It's a weird sound like a sci-fi movie. You certainly hear the familiar chirp of the nearby ones, this is just this other large background sound that I don't remember from 17 years ago (I lived then in Bethesda). They stop their din at dusk however.
Maybe they aren't coming to Philly, which is a shame, I wanted my cats to eat some.
