And while I'm on the subject, have you ever noticed that whenever the government is trying to push an unpopular military action, they always trot out "Support Our Troops" ? As if the troops just woke up one day and decided on their own to invade another country. "You're questioning the policy of the leaders who sent the troops there in the first place??? You don't support our troops!!!" "You want to know WHY your son's being put at risk??? What are you, a terrorist???"
The people who blindly accquiesce to allowing this country's young people to be sent off somewhere to kill and risk being killed "support our troops", while the people who demand answers to hard questions are "unpatriotic".
And you all know there is talk of reviving the draft to send more troops into this Iraq mess. If you are of draft age or know someone who is, you'd better vote as if your (or their) life depended on it.

This is my addition to the discussion on fanaticism:
[I]t is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
