Speaking of artisan bread, does anyone know where I can get Russian black bread? I'm looking for a loaf that is pitch black inside and out, has a thick, hard, brittle crust, and has a chewy consistency and a spicy taste (caraway and maybe anise?)
Check with Jim Lily at his Metropolitan Bakery / Coffee shop location at 40th and Walnut.
(Just past the Parking Garage entrance, next to the DP office, ... the old Christian Scientist Reading Room.)
He has a regular collection of breads he sells, but they can prepare others on special order.
