I wouldn't know the difference between soil and sod, I'm afraid. There are two piles. One is mulch. The other looks like what you get in bags of potting soil. Kind of a rich brown color.
The piles are of Wood Chips and Mulched wood chips.
UC Green has made arrangements with, I believe it is PECO and the Fairmount Park Commission, to provide the piles there. They are replenished on a periodic basis.
The wood chips ARE wood chips -- the output of a "chipper" used to cut up branches when trimming tress, storm clean up, etc. They are basically white in color. Better for use as a path material than as a "simple mulch." Although, some people like that look.
The "real mulch" is a dark brown, and I believe comes from the Fairmount Park Recycling effort. This is also basically wood chips and leaves, which have been "composed" for some period of time. It is a finer grained material than the "wood chips" -- but not much -- more on the lines of the "pine bark mulch" or "licorice root mulch" (aka Right Dress) found at the Garden Supply Center, but much coarser than any "soil."
