Also, may I remind you, that more than a few folks who subscribe to
this listserv find some of your postings more offensive than an advertisement in
what you cavalierly choose to denigrate as a "local rag." The University
City Review and it's sister paper, the Weekly Press,
have been extraordinarily courageous in allowing the dissemination of
facts and opinion -- usually identified as one or the other -- that few
community papers would carry for fear of offending a big advertiser. Obviously,
in some ways, I'd like my well-reasoned tirades against the PHC, UCD,
the Swiss cheesemakers who dump their product in the US below cost to hurt our
patriotic domestic dairy farmers and Monteray Jack producers, &c,
all to be featured by the UCReview and other media while the
self-serving pap by Gersil Kay, Greg Montenaro, whats-his-name who used to live
on St Bernard Street and dime-dropped the neighbors' kids for shooting hoops on
the street, and others who are so benighted that they see things
differently than I do, would be deemed unworthy of publication.
Fortunately for us all (including me), that's not the way to promote the worthy
ideal the new Penn president preaches and may even practice under the
rubric "deliberative democracy."
One more thing. Although the suggestion was made and taken that you
start a "culture" list for your esoteric verbal onanism, as a way of
directing it toward people sophisticated enough to appreciate it
and not wasting it on those of us slobs who consider it tiresome,
nobody (that I know of) ever suggested that you somehow be censored other than
by the use of the "delete" key by individuals in the privacy of their own
keyboards.
