This is serious and this is funny. There is more to fighting than fighting. It touches the concept of being a warrior. It is a special awareness/skill, like being a gifted athlete or chess player.  A knowing when to step up or to be modest. While certain skills can be taught, much is intuitive.

Right and wrong. Put him down fast and make sure he can't get up. Don't let him suck you into a ground game. Most kids, as you described them, will back off, when you put down the aggressor.

Not to sound flip, but how did you miss this significant weaponry, while performing your immediate action assessment.
 
Fighting is like practicing medicine. It is science, knowledge, skill, and art. Without the appropriate proportions, the outcome can be grim.
