Took a look at your jpegs and it looks like those a raccoon might make. Seems you may have an active den area. You see any in your yard?

I noticed a similar problem back in the Spring with our dogwood. After talking with an assortment of "tree people" the consensus was that it was neither critters or bugs, but probably just "rampant growth." The damage was first visible in about May or June and now looks basically like your second photo.
