the problem is that other websites can also read the mapquest
   cookies or any other cookies.

Only if your browser is mis-configured (the way Internet Explorer is
when you install it - gotta love Microsoft). I think all browsers
allow you to save cookies only for the session, so when you close your
browser they go away. This way, you can shop online (the contents of
your shopping cart are stored in cookies), but you're not carrying
around a complete history of everything you've ever done.

Some browsers allow you to restrict cookies so that they can only be
read by the site that created them. This is perfect, because when you
go back to a site it remembers your preferences, but sites can't snoop
into what you've been doing on other sites. This can backfire, for
instance if an online merchant uses one site for shopping and another
site for checkout and credit card stuff; you go to check out and it
says that your shopping cart is empty.
