On Saturday, November 20, Crossroads will explore the connections
between recorded music and live performance from the early days of
windup victrolas through hiphop and the age of vinyl to cutting-edge
digital sampling. This Philadelphia Crossroads event features DJ
VICTROLA, REFLECT, and DJ ROBOTRAKE and will begin at 7:30 at Calvary
Church at 48th Street and Baltimore Avenue. Tickets are on a $5-15
sliding scale.
DJ VICTROLA (Todd Young) collects early mechanical gramophones and 78
records from all genres of music. His performances take audiences back
to the days when sound equipment was still rare and expensive and
listening to recorded music was a communal experience. Todd also plays
keyboards with EDO and for this show he will be joined by bandleader
Eliot Duhan.
REFLECT spins jazz, nu-jazz, broken beat, afro, eclectic sound and
afro-futurist sounds at venues in both West Philly and around the
city. In addition to his live performances, he's recorded soundtracks
for documentary films, video games, and kids' TV shows.
DJ ROBOTRAKE combines hiphop beats with samples of the ambient noise of
the city and science fiction soundtracks to create a downtempo
electronic sound that suggests a world yet to come. His influences
include the Orb, Future Sound of London, and Wolf Eyes. When behind the
digital turntables, you can find him working at the Green Line Caf or
inhabiting a futuristic world of digital loops and beats.
