I know this sounds dramatic, but I do the "walking in the street" anytime I feel someone is behind me, it's dark and I'm not certain of the person's intentions. Hey, life in the big city *is* dramatic! And, on the flip side, if you're walking around at night and there's someone walking in front of you, it can be considerate to cross to the other side of the street rather than overtake them from behind. After I got mugged, I flinched every time I heard running feet coming up behind me. My father tells a story of walking home late at night, streets totally deserted. Wall Street area, so there's no one around at all. There's a woman walking alone up ahead, doing the "don't-accost-me-I'm-just- trying-to-get-home" walk. He's a fast walker, so he's gradually catching up to her, and she's getting more nervous. He passes by (giving her plenty of space), and once he's in front of her he says, "I'll walk about a half block in front of you. Anyone gives you trouble, I'll hear if you call." I'm still not sure if that made her feel more comfortable, or freaked her out more. But, his heart was in the right place. Me, I usually just cross to the other side of the street. I just like re-telling my father's stories. --- Chip ---- You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named "UnivCity."
