To the list:

I just had an inspector examine a developing problem in my second
floor staircase. Apparently, a wall joist is coming loose on the east
Side, causing the stairs to list downward towards the west side and
creating some ominous looking cracks.

The inspector says the situation is not urgent, since
Some houses in our neighborhood of my vintage (1889) develop these
cracks
Around the staircases without the supports becoming so loose that
repairs
become essential. So, I am in a holding pattern.

However, if the cracks widen further, he says I will need to have the
flooring ripped out and the joist replaced. For this to be done
Properly, I do need someone with expertise in repairing stairs in
Victorian homes. I would like to be prepared for the worst in case
Those cracks widen.

Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with problems of this kind so
That they could tell me someone they would recommend/not recommend to
handle repairs on a Victorian era staircse?

I would appreciate any advice!! (You can reply off list if you prefer,
but
Others might be interested, since this is apparently a pretty common
problem with the older houses west of Penn.)

Thanks.
