Dear Neighbors and Friends,
News photos of the natural disaster in South East Asia have left me
reeling from horrific images seared into my mind's eye. I believe for
many, it is an easy journey through shock to compassion and to a desire
to help. The most portable and useful thing that most of us can do now,
is to send money. But, the news tonight brings a warning of "Scammers"
abusing sentiment and misdirecting donations.
Fortunately, one of our Powelton Village neighbors, Kusum Soin, happens
to be the President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the "Association of
Indians in America". Kusum is spearheading collection efforts and she
will channel tax-deductible donations through the Indian Red Cross via
the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C.
Checks should be made payable to "AIA - Philadelphia" (Association of
Indians in America - Philadelphia Chapter)
and mailed to the following address:
Kusum Soin
319 N 34th Street
Philadelphia PA 19104

The humanitarian relief effort is designed to prevent post-quake
disasters such as epidemics, starvation, dehydration, homelessness, chaos
and ill-considered relocation of people.
The full magnitude of the disaster is still being assessed but need
definitely exceeds existing resources in the affected areas.
I hope Kusum is able to deliver a generous portion of help, from us, and
our world class University neighborhoods, to a world of enormous need.
Donations may also be brought to an Indian Ocean Tsunami Relief Drive
event that will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2005 at the University
of Pennsylvania.
I also implore all who pray to include the lost, bereft and injured in
your intercessions and to include those of us blessed with warm homes,
ample water and cherished families in prayers of thanksgiving and
continuity.
I love living here in University City and can not imagine the agony of
having neighbors and neighborhood erased by disaster. I wish all of us a
safe and Happy 2005.
