I've been had.
I met someone (who shall go un-named) who was actively trapping some of the sickest kittens from the property. They told me that they had confronted Paul, and had gotten the pro-life response directly from him. They also told me that her offers to collect cats had been rejected.
As you posted, this was about a year ago. The condition of the cats around his property was so distressing it seemed as reasonable an explanation as any. I never would have imagined that concern for animals would have led to such a scenario.
I'm also surprised at the complexity of the myth, I was suckered in by the detail. Your version of the events is much more plausible.
I feel bad for falling for the gossip, I'm usually more savvy than that. I don't even understand the reason for creating the myth. If cats have ear mites and respiratory infections, stealing them away to a shelter is the right thing to do regardless of the motivations that led to their suffering.
As someone who suffers from chronic pain myself, I understand how one can appear to be mentally ill from the limitations of that condition.
So, I apologize to the list. My motivation was to be a smart ass, not to be mean.

This is not true.

I went to Paul, and asked about if he would accept help spaying the cats.
He said yes.
For him the obstacles were money, time and energy levels.
These are not his cats.
These cats have already been abandoned, and tend to congregate at his
house because he provides food and water.
I believe that one of our Regent neighbors has generously and
successfully arranged to have several of the cats fixed.
As his neighbor, I wish Paul had a different hobby, but Pete, having read
this ridiculous bit of neighbor and Catholic bashing, I wish the same of
you. Gossip is not a happy hobby. I am glad your normal vents are
superior to the example shown below.

Animals have no souls in the funny character's religion. Being crazy, and having archaic religious beliefs is harmless enough. Creating a
community of neglected cats that become your neighbor's problem is shitty.
I think "funny character" is actually a way of elevating his standing in the hood.
That's my double nickels on the dime about it.
