Danny Schechter's "WMD" premieres in Phila. on March 9
"Paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shot and shell." --Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black
The Bush administration has come under considerable criticism for misrepresenting, manufacturing and promoting misleading evidence to justify our preemptive invasion and occupation of Iraq. As current events bear out, this behavior continues today around a host of policy issues.
Even more disturbing than the administration’s behavior was the lack of critical investigation and reporting by the media during the crucial days leading up to the invasion of Iraq and the early weeks and months of our occupation, behavior that also continues today.
In his brilliant documentary "Weapons of Mass Deception," filmmaker and investigative reporter Danny Schechter makes the compelling case that the media’s failure to scrutinize the evidence and information handed out to them during government press briefings on Iraq amounted to nothing less than a dereliction of duty.
Using film footage, interviews and documentation, "Weapons of Mass Deception" shows how the media fell into lockstep with the administration and abandoned their role as government watchdogs when their democracy needed them most.
