Hi,

The FoCP planning committee met last night partly to discuss the dog run proposal. Below is a brief summary of the dog run discussion (it is also availably on phillydog.org). As many of you are interested in this issue I just wanted to keep you all informed as to the current status in regards to the FoCP process.

One of the major concerns raised previously and again last night is the lack of a large, organized group of dog owners that would maintain the dog run. While an organization (UC Dog) does exist with the express purpose of managing a public dog run, it has not been very active over the past few years. Through discussions separate from the FoCP process, the organizers of UC Dog have begun a campaign to increase membership and activity in the community. UC Dog does support the Clark Park dog run proposal presented at the FoCP January membership meeting as well as the Dog Run Petition available through phillydog.org. If you would like to see a dog run in the park, please consider joining FoCP and/or UC Dog.

If you have questions or comments about the dog run, please let me know.

Thanks,
Stephen

*March 2005.* The dog run proposal was discussed during the March /planning committee/ meeting. Committee members expressed frustration that the dog owners are not more organized and active in the park. There is concern that without a large, active dog owners group and a more detailed plan of how to organize the dog owners, the maintenance of the dog run will become the responsibility of FoCP. Members also expressed concerns about how to make sure that the dog owners will use the dog run. After further discussion it was decided we would invite a representative from the Friends of Schuykill River Park to come to the April /planning meeting/ to discuss their experience. It was also found that there is a very large discrepency between the budget presented in the dog run proposal and the budget originally created in the renewal plan. The task force will work to resolve this discrepency.
