Members of the community interested in historic preservation in Philadelphia are invited

to attend this forum to discuss Philadelphias historic district designation process. The

March 14th forum will be a chance for the community to review the recommendations by

the Historic Preservation Task Force.

The forum is being sponsored by the Historic Preservation Task Force that has been

convened by Philadelphia City Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell and chaired by Gary

Hack, dean of the School of the Design of the University of Pennsylvania.

The task force has been charged with making recommendations to Councilwoman Jannie

L. Blackwell, City Council, Mayor John Street, and the Historical Commission,

concerning the historic district designation process. The task force has investigated how

other cities deal with these issues in order to understand best practices in framing its

recommendations. The task force has held three public meetings in this series focusing on

inclusion and the historic district designation process and the impact of district

designation on people with low and moderate incomes.

The recommendations of the Task Force aim to improve the process through which

historic districts are formed. The Task Force will recommend a series of actions to

Councilwoman Blackwell, which will, among other things, increase community

participation in the preservation process. In the spirit both of the recommendations and

of the forum series, participants are encouraged to provide feedback and comment on the

recommendations.
