Ummm .... the Musketeers were in the court of Louis XIV, and that was the
17th century.

Hmmm..... good question. Could be interpreted as taking off his glove to
slap Bruce across the face, thus challenging him to a duel in a quaint 18th
century Three Musketeers style.

On the other hand, when he says "Gloves are off", somehow it conjures up
an image of Michael Jackson in one of those old MTV videos like Gangsta
Paradise. And when he says "neighborhood" it makes me think of Mr. Rogers.
In other words, rather than *feeling* or *perceiving* it as a threat, it
just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Of course, the problem with these new electronic media like email is that
there are just no CONTEXTUAL CLUES to the discourse. Know what I'm saying?
You can't SEE the other person's facial expression, so how the heck are you
to know when somebody is serious and somebody is just being sarcastic. Man,
I spend an awful lot of time on this listserve trying to figure this stuff
out. Maybe the only solution is for all the subscribers to get webcams
attached to their computers so we can actually SEE their facial expressions
when they type their messages. On the other hand that would present problems
too, not only because some folks can EVEN FAKE facial expressions, but also
because I know from experience that most of the people posting to this list
are ugly as sin and who wants to have to deal with THAT??
