Hi, Christine. Do you have an advance schedule of these events? Veronica
Chambers is a aunt to two of our students and she wrote a book that our
upper grade students are using for a unit on the Harlem Renassiance. It
would have been great to see if she could have come to PAS for a visit
inconjunction with her visit to the Bookstore tomorrow.
At this late date, we can't plan, but if I have a list I could see who
would be acceptable.

Veronica Chambers Reveals the Dynamic Story of Modern Japanese Women*
Veronica Chambers will present “Kickboxing Geishas: How Modern Japanese Women
Are Changing Their Nation” on January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Veronica Chambers will lead a discussion on the ways in which the women of Japan are morphing themselves and their nation. She will share some of the stories from the extraordinary women she interviewed for “Kickboxing Geishas” including:
Makiko Fujino, one of Japan’s “charismatic housewives”—a television personality as famous as Martha Stewart, who was recently elected to the Japanese House of Representatives; Yoko Tajima, Japan’s most famous feminist; Mika Ninagawa, a prominent photographer and, Junko Asazuma, the internationally ranked snowboarder.
Chambers previously wrote for the “New York Times Magazine” and “Newsweek.”
Her work has appeared in publications such as “Vogue” and “Glamour.” She is the
author of four previous books including “Miss Black America,” “Mama’s Girl,”
“Having it All?: Black Women and Success” and “The Joy of Doing Things Badly.”
*Penn Professor Reveals the Power of Opinion Polling in Award Winning Book*
Penn Professor Sarah E. Igo will present "The Averaged American: Surveys, Citizens,
and the Making of a Mass Public" on February 1 at 5:30 p.m.
Igo tells the story of how opinion polls, man-in-the-street interviews, sex
surveys, community studies, and consumer research transformed the United States
public. Igo argues that modern surveys, from the Middletown studies to the
Gallup Poll and the Kinsey Reports, projected new visions of the nation:
authoritative accounts of majorities and minorities, the mainstream and the
marginal.
“We can see how those surveyed yearned for and understood their roles in the
survey process--as well as the creation of expectations of what it meant to
live as 'typical' or 'average' respondents/citizens in a mass society,” says
Daniel Horowitz, Professor of American Studies, Smith College.
Igo is an Assistant Professor of History at Penn. She obtained her A.B. from
Harvard University and her Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. She
received the 2006 President's Book Award of the Social Science History
Association for “The Averaged American.” Igo is also a recent recipient of the
Early Career Award from the Journal for the History of the Behavioral Sciences
and the Forum for the History of the Human Sciences. In 2003, she was granted
the Penn History Department's Richard S. Dunn Award for Distinguished Teaching.*
