In defense of UCD...

I believe they have tried hard to
Educate about recycling and trash policies,
Prevent and Mitigate Trash problems
Resolve Trash (including abandoned cars) problems.

I distribute flyers created by UCD to incoming tenants and home Buyers, I
call them for help in solving short term needs, and I am pleasantly
surprised when they see a need and resolve it before I have even
processed possible resolutions.

Liz,

We always hear about UCD picking up trash. That would be fine. Please don't let it distract you from the very serious problems this creation means to our community. Ask yourself, am I really ready to throw in the trash the most important and fundamental principals that we historically valued in our system of government?

Penn's agent, UCD, is funded primarily to support the global recruitment of students. I suspect Penn's total marketing budget is much much larger than UCD's budget. Penn feels that "the miracle in University City" fiction will support the goals of global marketing and that is the reason UCD exists. To say that UCD is in business to pick up your trash and Melanie's leaves is like saying Walmart is in the bubble gum business because they have a bubble gum machine at their door.

UCD is attempting to replace the city of Philadelphia as our local government. They engage in outrageous propaganda. They intentionally strive to create divisiveness within the community to accomplish their goals. I uncovered their complete contempt for our community years ago because of my serious involvement in Clark Park. Others uncovered the bullying of Baltimore Ave businesses. Al Krigman just posted what he knows about their involvement with trash tickets. And the constant propaganda is a matter of public record. How many warning signs are we going to ignore because John and Lewis pick up trash?

They refuse when questioned to provide any empirical proof of their outrageous claims. The complete lack of accountability to this community that Penn demands, as our government, completely strips, we the people, of our rights and the principals our entire government is founded upon. Our government is to be of the people, and by the people, not employees of the University Trustees.

There are serious warning signs. Did you go to any of those NID presentations? Almost all the people that attended those saw overwhelming evidence of the contempt those propagandists have for our community.

I know people are bored with history but I read about this group in a society that did some popular things. They pulled their country out of depression, built some really good roads that inspired the Eisenhower interstates, and developed a lot of programs for the kids. Of course when they did a few things that I would consider warning signs, some people believe that all the economic successes helped blind too many of the people to question their true agenda and direction.

Some years later people would ask things like, how could they do that? Why didn't the people stop them? In hindsight it seems really easy to see what happened. Warning signs were ignored and the propagandists were successful. It's old history so I won't bore the readers.

Establishing UCD as our government is the establishment of plutocracy. Sorry my opinion might be discouraging, but I predict when that happens you're not going to get Fenton to pick up your trash anymore. Your neighbors will lose their houses to historic districts and trash tickets. People will leave the neighborhood in handcuffs.

Liz, when they tell us they're cleaning up the neighborhood and getting rid of the whores and gang members, they're talking about a lot of your friends. They're talking about my friends and me as well. They're talking about the residents of little Mantua and the people who go to those less than upscale stores on Baltimore Ave. You once told me that you enjoyed seeing the true reflection of our diverse community when you watched us playing volleyball in Clark Park. We're a community not criminals.

It's nice now when John and Lewis fix Melanie's toilet, but when the power is finally secured; I sincerely believe that neither you nor Melanie is going to like what happens. I offer my opinion sincerely.

It is true about UCD and trash. When I think of trash, I think about the UCD report card and The Quest

Glenn

One example:
Our gigantic 2006 Halloween extravaganza took place on a Tuesday evening.
I had forgotten it was trash night, and also a last of the month (a
move-out day).
But as cans were carried to the curb, I realized we might have to
volunteer one extra task, dragging cans back into alleys, and than out
again at the end of the evening (when all the volunteers are already
exhausted and deserve a better finale than trash disposal).
One nearby neighbor carried a huge amount of trash to the curb, along
with mattresses, upholstered furniture and other refuse from a recently
moved tenants.
While scary, it did not quite capture the tone of the celebration that
Cindy Preston and I had planned.
Before I had to determine which of my kids would be in charge of moving
it in and out of distant alleys, so that the sidewalk would remain clear
during our pageant, UCD had taken care of it.
I remain grateful to Lewis Wendell and John Fenton and their UCD staffers
who recognized and acted upon ways to improve an event that was mostly
volunteer driven and which entertained 2,000 visitors, and which
contributes to the unique nature of our diverse and wacky neighborhood.

In protest of the Trash tickets,
I have had several, usually for recycling violations.
Since I am a block Captain, and a rabid recycler, and have made
extraordinary efforts to encourage my neighbors and tenants to recycle,
the tickets make me feel wild.
Some days it is only the knowledge that arbitrary rules and enforcement
by clique are probably even more likely in smaller communities that keeps
me close to home.

Best!
Liz
