I shall copy my response that was sent offlist to you. Dear Melani, You¹re right. I did not mean to send this email to you. As for people of color monitoring behavior, I meant not you personally, but the power brokers who first befriended longtime residents of color, got them to engage the community because they were credible. When disagreement arose between the two factions, refused to explain anything and used resources at hand to discredit naysayers. Why do you keep needling Al as a cheapskate who doesn¹t want to part with a portion of his large fortune in order to support the UCD/NID? If Al (who is quite astute), feels you have libeled him, he could do what I could not do or others who were opposed to the UC byline, (we did not have the credibility or the power), to actually hold those assertions accountable. Forgive me if this should offend you, but I have seen so many people victimized by half-truths, mistruths, rumor and innuendo because they could not compete against the credibility of people with money who did not look the same as the residents who were trying to hold on to their neighborhood. For the record, I am not excusing Al entirely. He seized an opportunity and was successful. The difference is he did not try to convince the community that he was in their corner. You know that I respect you and your efforts for this community even though we might disagree on certain political issues. ³It¹s business; not personal.² I disagree with lots of people with whom I respect and socialize.
