We eat there a lot, mostly for takeout. It is the Eastern Mediterranean joint we prefer in University City.

Sa'ad seems to be open on every day, at every hour that we want takeout food. I don't recall placing an order during Ramadan, so I can't say what he does then. His kitchen lies within two blocks of two mosques, so I suspect he faces market pressure to respect Islamic customers. The wall art is unquestionably devout: 10 times more illustrations of Mecca than I've ever seen illustrations of, say, St. Peter's in an Italian-American restaurant. But my impression of the proprietor is he is more interested in selling food than faith. His kitchen staff does not wear ostentatious religious dress, for instance -- less so than some of the Plain-Folk vendors at the Clark Park Farmers' Market, for instance.

He does serve a basic Philadelphian short-order grill menu, with cheesesteaks and the like, along with his Middle Eastern fare. So I would describe Sa'ad as a successful crossover/crossroad ethnic restaurant.

Are there regular business hours or still "Brigadoon" hours.

Another listserv poster said they had Cheese steaks and when my husband and
I went by after riding our bikes on the Drive this past Sunday, but he was
closed.

I DO know he closes for the entire month of "Ramadan". Aside from that when
is he open and what does he serve?
