PS: Sharrieff, if you or anyone from the safety committee wish to
accompany me to the 18th district, please get in touch asap."
Half an hour later:
"I will not again forward information for you to share with the civil
censored Penn list. For your own sake, I suggest that you get away from
them. Please inform them that from current reports, the earlier report
of armed black men committing car jackings is false
If some young black kid runs in fear from the police because frightened
neighbors respond with increased fear, I would feel terrible if I didn't
make the best effort to inform even barking cheese."
Four hours after that:
"I can now confirm that Mr. Tony West’s report of a car jacking at 44th
and Larchwood never happened.. [...] Mr. Tony West has manufactured a
false crime report. He falsely claimed that there are 2 black male car
jackers at large, and one of them is willing to brandish a gun. He
falsely accused the police of serious mishandling of this manufactured
crime. He intentionally tried to frighten many of our neighbors. And he
risked serious side effects even catastrophe had he been taken
seriously. If I were any African American or black person in this
neighborhood, I would be outraged. I’m outraged anyway!"
5 p.m. that same day:
"I'm being "childish" for exposing this terrible lie and bringing relief
to anyone who believed it? The cheeshead could not possibly be such a
poor reader, could he? If he has any evidnce that a car jacking happened
at West's, why doesn't cheesehead post it instead of barfing at me and
continuing to bark on this list? [...] If you send any more of this
"civil" crap to me, I will identify you. Go back to your bullshit
barking cheese list."
5:24 p.m.:
"Go back to barfing civil cheese, Joe."
That evening:
"You know Stern, I'm getting tired of being civil when someone posts
crap like this. I described exactly how I discovered that the car
jacking did not occur. If the police made some crazy mistake, I would be
held blameless for the way I reported what happened. Hey when that
happens, I'll admit any mistake I would have made. [...] You accuse me
of seeking to defame West. [...] You readily attack my character yet you
were too damn stupid to even call the district and the officer I clearly
identified! What if it turns out that I was doing an important community
service by looking into this lie while dealing with mean stupid posts
like yours."
Two days later:
"I received the e-mail copied below yesterday morning. It claims to be
brother of the victim and asserts that the earlier report of a 44th and
Larchwood, August 1, car jacking was in fact true. I responded to the
strange e-mail immediately but have gotten no reply.[...] It’s a little
freaky that there is some unidentified sneaky member of this list or the
censored, private, University of Pennsylvania listserv with lots of
information and connections to this alleged serious incident, but who
will not come forward to confirm it. [...] All of this stuff is too much
and scary. I’ll have to go to police headquarters tomorrow morning as
this gets deeper. I don’t have the time for this but this is getting too
scary. I'll be sure to give a report to the list. If this sneaky list
member with information about this affair (who allegedly forwarded my
post to this writer) could come forward, the community might be able to
get the truth! One way or the other, this is a serious matter for all of
us! This is either about serious unsolved crime right here and
unacceptable police incompetence or a serious coordinated internet
campaign to lie and spread fear that is centered right here. What is the
truth?"
That Evening:
"I went to the 18th district Friday morning. The police officer was able
to tell me that there was an incident at 44th and Larchwood that night,
an abandoned vehicle removed. No carjacking. When I returned in the
afternoon to show the community affairs officer, Officer Davis, the list
reports; I asked him if there is any possibility that a record could be
delayed from them. He told me NO CHANCE and told me explicitly that I
could PUBLICLY inform the list that this report was completely FALSE. It
didn’t happen. [...] Does any one else understand that either way there
is a serious problem with all of this? Complete mishandling right down
to losing/hiding the report of an armed robbery is what we are talking
about. Otherwise, the police have told me twice that this report is
false and we have a rather serious hoax. Tomorrow, I’m going to police
headquarters with the new account I received to get to the bottom of
this. As always, I will report what I find out. [...] When the truth
comes out, how are the rest of the folks concerned about civility on the
list going to respond to these individuals?????? Even at this point as I
try to find the truth, the posts from those jackals should be widely
condemned because of spewing crap at me without a basic attempt to
verify what I have discovered. Shame on barking cheese! Shame on the
free pass for the civil folks!"
This Morning:
"I want to leave you some info before heading to police headquarters and
press room.[...] I've known that a gang here in "little Mantua" has been
attempting to instill fear in residents to support centralizing power
and a gentrification through plutocracy agenda. This is the case whether
this incident occurred or did not. Remember, the whores and gangs of
little Mantua's Clark Park "
And finally....
"It appears we do have a police problem. [,,,] There was some type of
car robbery incident on the 500 block of 44th, although details of the 2
accounts are disputed. I wasn’t given the details. I explained how this
misinformation has now placed me in the position of passing their
misinformation publicly while looking for the truth. As I said before
when the second account arrived, one way or the other we have a serious
problem. [...] He apologized for the incorrect information I was given
and had no explanation. I asked them to follow up and explain to me how
they could give me incorrect information. And how I could be told that
it was OK to expose it publicly as a false report. I'm going to also
contact the police press room so that they can address this problem. I
regret the period of misinformation in which I was involved, but did
give you the reports exactly as I received them. Now, I will return to
the main headquarters and file a complaint with the police. I feel we
all need some answers."
SUMMARY:
Stage 1: Glenn accuses Tony West of making up stories of black men
preying upon residents.
Stage 2: Glenn yells insults at his critics.
Stage 3: Glenn, faced with the possibility that he ran with a conclusion
that may not be true, compensates by reporting on how the Philly Police
stonewalled his questions. he also makes sure to note that he should be
held "blameless."
Stage 4; Glenn, faced with the fact that the carjacking did occur, and
that he went out of his way to accuse Tony West of spreading racist
rumors for some ees-vil purpose, shifts the blame to the "problem" with
the police.
