It must be the business thing where the college can earn lots of money offering these seminars, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of our community. Like it or not, Penn adopted the retail marketing concept of $/sq ft for costs & revenue when they brought in Wild Bill / Neutrino Bill (forgot his last name) from Michigan to re-make their Medical Center. The concept has insidiously and perhaps needfully penetrated all aspects of their institution. Just as the real estate department looks at infill strategies to maximize the revenue from undeveloped real estate, the academics are looking at the same types of course based infill strategies. If the academics find critical problems with planning and real estate's strategies, it gives the Trustees the opportunity to assert they have implemented elegant self-correcting management systems. Just what we expect from one of our Nation's great research institutions.
