Dear University City Review Readers
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of
University City District (UCD) to explain the extensive
efforts that UCD has made and continues to make, to engage
with and gather input from the University City community.
UCD’s Board of Directors is currently made up of 23
members from diverse backgrounds. Of these, five seats are
held for representatives from each of the University City
community associations. The Board renewal process involves
each neighborhood association selecting and nominating two
candidates for consideration to the UCD Board. The UCD Board
then votes and chooses to elect one of the two proposed
candidates. When a representative’s term expires UCD sends a
letter to the community association and asks whether the
community association would like to renew that person’s
representation on the Board or nominate a new individual.
Current representation on our Board includes members from
the Spruce Hill, Garden Court, Cedar Park, Walnut Hill and
Powelton Village Civic Associations. These representatives,
like all Board members, are provided with up to date reports
on all of UCD’s activities and have numerous opportunities
to comment, provide advice and to help shape these programs.
The composition of the board is as follows:
Five (22%) representatives are from the 5 Community
Associations; Seven (30%) represent businesses and
landlords; Four (18%) members are representatives of
non-profit organizations; Seven (30%) are from the major
educational or health care institutions in University City.
In addition, UCD maintains committees and/or task forces
in the areas of:
Clark Park Partnership
Fundraising
Landlord Network
LUCY®
Marketing
Planning and Capital Improvements
Public Safety
Public Space Maintenance
BID Steering
There are a total of 165 people that participate on a
regular basis on these committees. All are either University
City residents or business and organizational stakeholders
in University City. A full list of the members of these
committees is available on our web-site at
http://www.ucityphila.org/about/ucd-committee-lists.
These committees/task forces meet quarterly and in some
cases monthly and have representation from the residential
community as well as businesses, nonprofits and other
city-wide organizations. They provide ideas and input, offer
suggestions and make decisions based on current and proposed
UCD projects.
UCD also convenes special project task forces that help
guide projects in the community. Recent task forces have
included the Baltimore Avenue Triangle Improvement task
force and the 40th and Market Street Improvement task force.
These task forces are always made up of people who have a
direct stake in the project, such as nearby residents,
business owners, and property owners, as well as
representatives from relevant city agencies who can help
inform and expedite the process.
When we embark on new projects that have a direct impact
on the community, we hold open community meetings to educate
the residents on the specific details of the project while
allowing the opportunity for their feedback so that we can
adapt our plans accordingly.
Each University City community association is assigned a
UCD staff liaison. Staff attends their meetings, presents
information on current UCD projects and listens to ideas and
feedback.
All of the ways we engage with the University City
community have direct implications for the work UCD does. In
many cases it shapes the direction of our future projects.
I welcome any feedback readers may have and am open to
suggestions on ways to continue to improve our interactions
with the University City residents, neighbors, employees,
institutions, businesses, students and visitors.
Thank you,
Lewis Wendell
Executive Director
University City District
