Friends of Clark Park election 10/17, 7pm USP's Griffith Hall
In addition to the fine candidates for the FoCP board of directors announced earlier, I will also be running. If elected, I offer to chair the maintenance committee to fill a role that has been vacant for the past year. I will work to reduce the park's dependency on private funding for trash pickup by restoring weekly pick up by the City, and I will provide needed oversight for the mowing contractor and other privately-funded services. I promise to address the declining condition of the park's green infrastructure that is a result of the over-scheduling of large events. I will work to develop a proposal for recycling so that Clark Park can serve as a model for park compliance with long-standing mandatory recycling laws. I will advocate for the creation of a Clark Park Dog Owners Association that is independent of the FoCP. I served on the FoCP board of directors for four terms from 1994 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2004, during which time I served as the chair of the maintenance committee. Following my particpation in PA Horticultural Society's Tree Tenders Training, I initiated the planting of 16 trees along 43rd Street from Baltimore Ave to Regent Square in 1994. I have participated in the planning and planting of scores of other new trees and contributed to the continuing care and watering of these thriving new members of our urban forest. I organize a yearly group outing to the Phillies as a fundraiser that has contributed to the building of a fund for a tree endowment for long-term tree care that is soon to reach $10,000.. The past two seasons I have served as a coach for the CP Youth Soccer Assoc.. I was bitten by a dog sometime in the early '70 (where was I bitten? in the tot lot) and I helped with the construction of the wooden playground that was built around the big triangular slide. I have walked my dogs in Clark Park for the past 14 years, and I regularly pick up treasures left in the park by other people as well as by their dogs. I have positive relationships with the Recreation Department's Parks Coordinator, with staffmembers of the Councilwoman's office and with many park users. These meeting are often lively and full of surprises. I hope that many of you are able to attend the tomorrow and vote for me. However, if you choose not to vote for me, I encourage you to stay home and watch the baseball playoffs.
