ALI AKBAR MORADI: SACRED KURDISH TANBUR

"Delicate but fiery Middle Eastern mountain music reflecting love and anguish in equal measure." - Songlines

Ali Akbar Moradi is the greatest living master of the Kurdish tanbur, a long-necked pear shaped mulberry-wood lute with a bowl-shaped back, two or three steel strings and fourteen frets. The tanbur, which dates back to the third millennium BC, is one of Southwest Asia's most ancient instruments. It can sound like a Turkish saz when strummed or a North Indian sarod when played melodically.

Mr. Moradi grew up in Kermanshah, Iran, where the tanbur is the only musical instrument used in the rituals of Ahl-e Haqq, the Sufi- influenced religion of the Yarsan people, who venerate it as a sacred object. He started studying tanbur and voice at the age of six and is now an acknowledged master. In addition to performing internationally, still teaches in Kermanshah and Teheran and is currently recording the complete 72 maghams (modes) of Kurdish tanbur, many of which are now only played by a few musicians.

At this performance, he will be joined by his sons Kourosh (percussion) and Arash (tanbur and setar), as well as Ulas Ozdemir (baglama and vocals).
