Rick Selvin, 64, of University City, a musician, Philadelphia Daily News editor
and writer, and 10-year heart-transplant survivor, died of multiple organ
failure Tuesday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Born into a
musical family (his father, Ben Selvin, was a big band leader in the 1930s),
Mr. Selvin shared his love of music with his wife and children. Mr. Selvin grew
up in Beverly Hills, Calif., then moved to Long Island, N.Y. He graduated from
the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., and earned a bachelor's degree from the
University of Pennsylvania. After writing for a few years for the Burlington
County Times and the Courier Post, he was hired in 1980 as an editor and writer
by the Philadelphia Daily News. Ten years ago Mr. Selvin suffered a series of
heart attacks and underwent a heart transplant. He retired from the Daily News
and devoted his time to music and enjoying life. "He was a kind man," said his
wife of 18 years, Florence. "Recently an old friend asked him for $2,500
because he was in a bind. Rick gave it to him, knowing he would probably never
be repaid." Mr. Selvin played in a number of bands and always attended the
Philadelphia Folk Festival. He passed his love of music and writing on to his
son, David. In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Selvin is survived by a
daughter, Emily; three grandchildren; and a sister. A Funeral Mass will be said
at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Francis de Sales Church, Springfield Ave at 47th St.,
Philadelphia, PA 19143. Donations may be made to the Francis de Sales Organ
Restoration Fund, c/o Charles Haub, treasurer, 442 S. 43d St., Philadelphia
19104.
