ANDY M. STEWART & GERRY O’BEIRNE: SCOTTISH AND IRISH SONGS
"Among the finest interpreters of Scottish folk songs and a wonderful
songwriter." Boston Globe
McNeil Center, University of the Sciences, 45th Street & Woodland Avenue
Andy M. Stewart is among the finest singers in the Scots/Irish
traditional genre, with a voice that "conveys more emotion in one line
than most singers do in a lifetime." (Beacon Herald). Born in
Perthshire, Scotland, Andy grew up in a family noted for its fine
traditional singing. He first drew the attention of the music world
with his work as lead singer and instrumentalist for Silly Wizard,
with whom he toured until their break-up in 1988. During this period,
Andy gained much recognition for his beautiful interpretations of the
traditional songs of Scotland and Ireland and became known as a master
of songwriting in the traditional style. His compositions have been
recorded by numerous artists, including June Tabor, The Dubliners and
Deanta.
Irish songwriter, guitarist and singer Gerry O’Beirne is a master of
the six and twelve string guitar (the London Times called his
instrumentals "out of this world") and also a renowned songwriter.
Born in Ennis in County Clare and raised in Ghana and the West of
Ireland, he grew up listening to both the traditional music of both
those places, as well as contemporary artists such as Bob Dylan and
The Beatles. His own writing is a hybrid of the passion found in
traditional music and the freshness of contemporary song. Gerry has
toured with and produced albums for artists including Patrick Street,
The Waterboys, Andy M Stewart, Martin Hayes, Kevin Burke and Andy
Irvine.
