Tony,
That is the larger question, isn't it? Is cable just one more of the tubes that fasten to our domicile and abett our sedentary lifestyle? I was watching Fanny & Alexander (not the acrobats) last evening and marvelled at the activities that they had to entertain each other: Singing, recitations, dancing and all. I know my Celtic blood yearns to spin a few yarns. (yearns-yarns; it's bubbling already). In the movie you even have an uncle who entertains the children with prodigious farting. Now there's a lost art! (the feat was achieved, no doubt, with high octane lutefisk as a propellant!) Seriously, I've had the pleasure of spending time with friends and acquaintances from Italy and Ireland and they know how to entertain themselves; they know how to have "fun" (which of course is the one thing that money can't buy, and so gets the brush off from the "invisible guiding hand" of capitalism).

When I was a Campus Apartments renter I was limited to Campus Technologies for Internet. (It was blazing fast, had connectivity to Penn's network which was useless to me, was expensive and didn't support home networking.) I don't remember the phone company they used but it wasn't Verizon. They also offered a weird limited cable TV option but I went with Comcast which was available in my building. It's not available in all of their buildings, or wasn't at the time.

This is interesting, since in West Philadelphia, aren't we ALL limited to Comcast for _cable_? Wouldn't it be great to have a choice?
