I also saw a brief BBC report. Apparently, in the UK, local governments were using these cameras primarily for minor infractions like litter or the famous "dog poop" crimes.

As I understood the brief report, local governments are being ordered to stop this use or they will lose their cameras. The oppresive message this "eye" sends out over the people has been judged to cause more damage than benefit to society.

Can you provide any more details about how you heard of this rumor? What organization is the proposed org, or company? A Plus/Sunoco may already have them in place.

It would certainly be a waste of money as it is well documented and researched that CCTV is ineffective at preventing crime.
