I left my place on Woodland Terrace around 11:15-ish on Saturday
night, intending to take the trolley into town. I saw several police
vans and an ambulance at the portal when I turned the corner. Two more
vans arrived as I walked by. A couple of guys were being handcuffed. I
ended up putting my iPod headphones into my pocket and walking to
Chestnut St. to catch a bus. On the way there I saw police on every
corner. The entire area seemed chaotic.
I've been taking the trolley around the same time on Friday and
Saturday nights for a few months. Lately, with SEPTA using shuttle
buses on several lines, there have been larger than average numbers of
people waiting for the next eastbound trolleys. I'm talking 20-30
people at a time. A few weeks ago, in addition to this now larger
number of people at the portal, a group of about 50 arrived at once
from north on 40th St. (Maybe a movie let out?) A fight broke out.
Some SEPTA police were in their vehicles and did nothing that I saw. A
trolley arrived and people rushed onto it, some of us ducking,
expecting shots. The trolley rocked when some of the fighting crowd
slammed against it. The driver managed to leave the station and I have
no idea what happened after that.
