Libraries in our neighborhoods are integral to our city, integral to our future Some of these library branches are over 100 years old. A lot of them survived the Great Depression. All of them are havens of imagination and ideas in the bleary wasteland of everyday life. They are more than books - they are de facto day care centers, and often the only place thousands of Philadelphians can access jobs and educational resources on the Internet. They don't have to be closed. Since Nutter announced the cuts, many have come forward with ways to save money - including an astonishing editorial from the Daily News on the fact that the Eagles owe the city $8 million, $8 million which is the precise amount that it would take to keep the libraries open! We need you to take action to help keep the libraries open: - Call the Mayor at 215-686-3000 and voice your opinion. - Call your city council member and ask for their help to save the libraries. www.hallwatch.org/elections/wardbook/repfinder - Come to a Town Hall meeting with Mayor Nutter and show your support for the libraries - *the first one is this Tuesday, Nov. 25, at South Philly High School, 2101 S. Broad (Info and schedule below). - Come to a massive rally Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Central Library at 12 p.m. - Donate at the website of the Friends of the Free Library http://www.libraryfriends.info Thank you so much. Everything helps. I have heard it said in this debate that since we have one of the best library systems in the country, then it's okay to cut branches. I ask, instead: if we have one of the best library systems in the country, shouldn't we be proud of that? Shouldn't we fight to preserve and protect something so valuable? It's up to you! Sincerely, Hannah Miller Philly for Change Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library.
