If any of you ever wish to meet Sister Fran, our local but internationally honored "Peace Pilgrim" and a woman who has traveled the world and engaged in community among both the poorest and most powerful people on the planet, you can contact her at: Sr. Francis Joseph, R.A. 1001 S. 47th Street Philadelphia, PA 19143 215-386-5016 Saint Joseph's University 610-660-1766 Every time I see Sr. Fran, I leave her presence feeling better about myself and more optimistic about the ways most of us can (do and will) make changes to help our planet. Sr. Fran is in her late 80's. She shares a community that includes a member who has achieved 100 years. These are ladies who have worked in slums in India, the Philippines, South America and here in Philadelphia. They have attended, even led meetings in Vatican City and other bastions of Money and Power. The Assumption Sisters have achieved a balance between action and contemplation that is rare and wonderful. Sr. Fran and her contemporaries speak many languages and have acquired layers of wisdom that few of us can penetrate but which all of us should try to tap into, while we can. If you have never attended one of these meetings, you should come to at least one, when you see a topic that holds personal interest. The talks are short, rarely more than a half hour. The Q&A session is often where the real learning takes place, and it is clear that the speakers want to learn from us as we from them. The atmosphere is genteel and promotes reverence, for careful hosting and each other. The light refreshments are sweet treats and soft drinks. And the gentle herding of all visitors out the door before 9 PM, reminds me of habits I should embrace (any alternative to my normal insomnia seems attractive). All the best!
