Dear Neighbors, Larry and I had the good fortune to be able to commission a piece of Art to fill a gap left on the underside of the porch at our 'investment' property at 600 S. 48th. The piece is called "TREE OF LIFE". It was designed, welded and installed by neighbor Nate Ross of 50th Street. We love the piece. Our tenants made a point of letting us know they love living in a building where attention to such details exist. I may be 'tooting my own horn', but I do hope that neighbors will stop and check out the piece, and if they like it, and know Nate, they will forward their own compliments on his good work and contribution to neighborhood beauty. Nate was also slowly replacing the ugly chain link fencing with stray bits of "Hairpin" and bottom rusted "clothes poles" that I would come upon during years of collecting at West Philly 'trash days'. Sadly, just as I'd gathered enough to complete the perimeter, a thief cut through chains to steal my sections and later Nate took a full time job, and now only does true "Art" commissions in his 'spare' time. When time, materials and money allow, we will finish the job, but meanwhile I know we have stopped the deterioration and are slowly making progress. Also, know several neighbors offered welcome sympathy and more welcome info and contributions of their obsoleted fencing.
I also wanted to use our happy acquisition to reinforce a few of the things I try to convey to list neighbors. 1. This Art Work is the type of thing that would likely be prohibited by the Historic Commission if a property is in a Philadelphia Historic District. 2. It is very satisfying to buy Art, especiouly when it helps support an artist neighbor and stimulate the local economy. Nate lives and spends in UC and I'm fairly certain that at least some of his fee will be spent at Dock Street. 3. Not all Landlords are Slumlords. 4. Improving property is better than abusing tenants. Longer more rewarding relationships become possible. 5. There are many good and honorable contractors working in this area. Some are listed below. The arch and other stonework was re-pointed, several years ago, by Gene Rose of Rose Masonry Restoration. He has gotten very busy and I find myself very happy with his spillover mason Cristopher Frakes of C&A Masonry 267-809-4321. Cris just restored an "Eyebrow" above one of our windows at home, and did beautiful "Box Pointing" on the foundation. Both restoration masons came to us from Conor Kelly who does magnificent sidewalks, exterior steps and basement parging. Conor can be reached at 215-837-1992.
