I happened to have heard your NPR piece. (I get the daily archive so
it's always a day late.)
Thank you and your parents (and by that, I'm including your stepother;
I don't know all the specifics of your family.) It was especially nice
to hear because my (straight) parents and the oldest of their
grandchildren (my sister's 8 yo daughter) were just in town visiting
me and my partner. There were many years of struggle in the past that
made it unlikely at first, but eventually possible for a visit like
that to have taken place and to have gone well. There was a period of
time when I never could have imagined such a visit, so it's always
nice to hear how other families manage, especially when they went
through it more easily, though sometimes unfortunately with more
difficulty, sometimes long ago, and sometimes still today.
Your family's experiences and courage, and the radio piece, directly
or indirectly, helped pave the way for me and my family as well as
future LGBT individuals and families. So thank you again for having
dealt with the challenges and also for having shared your story so
publicly.

Hi there:
Sorry for the impersonal form letter on this. I just got word that a
segment from my interview with my awesome Dad, Larry Buss, and
"Step-Other," Roy Wilbur, will air on the NPR Morning Edition Story
Corps segment Friday (tomorrow) morning.
My dad and Roy became grandparents for the first time when Sonja was
born in May 2007. The folks at Story Corps noticed an article in the
Philadelphia Inquirer on gay grandparents which featured them pretty
prominently, and asked us to be a part of the project. Story Corps
records interviews between people who care for one another -- usually
family members -- and deposits them in the Library of Congress. A
small number of them are edited to air on the radio, and we're really
honored that our interview was selected.
Our interview should broadcast on most NPR affiliates around 6:20am
and 8:20am Friday morning during Morning Edition. In Philly, that's
WHYY radio 90.9, of course. I'm pretty sure you can also listen at
your leisure on the Morning Edition website.
Take care,
Alexis
