Brief amateur review of our Wednesday dinner at Tampopo: There wasn't a good selection of beverages (it would be nice to have more, and less expensive, choices in stock), but it's BYOB, so do so! Ask up front for tap water.
They have interesting seating options; small individual-size "benches" (no back-rests) instead of chairs, and one long booth-style bench along two walls. Several small 2-person tables that can be easily arranged (albeit accompanied by painful screeching noise... they could use felt feet) to suit larger parties. I always used to get bi-bim-bob w/egg and beef, so that's what I got this time, since I'm a creature of habit. It was just as good as I'd remembered from Tampopo 1, which is to say, it tasted really good! My son gives it two thumbs up as well; he got the steamed dumplings and chicken bowl and ate it all up! However, they could improve on the timing of multiple orders to the same table. My dish was lukewarm whereas that of my dining partner was hot, and they were delivered simultaneously. The two childrens' dishes were delivered several minutes later even though they had ordered earlier, perhaps due to the combination of food they chose. We were provided with plastic-ware, paper napkins, and wooden chopsticks, and put away our own trays (recycling, garbage, tray, dishes need to be separated). It's been really busy the nights I've walked by (as well as tonight when I actually ate there). There was no sound system (yet?) so it wasn't noisy, even though there were several people there; that in itself is a major draw for me!!! The staff was friendly and helpful, and the preparation area is partially viewable. Given the University population, I do hope they'll be able and willing to stay open later than 9:30pm (maybe Friday and Saturday) to draw in more of the late-night crowd, maybe during the Fall and Spring semesters. $ to $$ Summary: it's a quality take-out place, but this location expanded to have more seating available. I like having the option to sit in comfortably. Dan W.
