Linda,

Yes, it's disturbing on several levels. My guess is that the vast majority of
West Philly people don't want this.

I'm not certain but I think this also takes place at Penn. Campus greens have
that same unhealthy look and no dandelions. Unlike healthy grass without the
biocide agents, there is something about the color and strength of the grass
that is wrong at Penn, and Clark Park since they started this. The grass at
Clark park never had that look until they started killing the so called weeds.
(I'm from the country and travel through PA and western New York a lot, so I
see lots of healthy grass.) I can't quite describe it, other than it doesn't
look healthy but almost artificial.

I saw a letter in one of the papers (I think NYT) from an urban bee keeper that
caught my eye. The author suggested that urban bee keepers aren't having the
problem that is attacking bee populations around the world. To me, that points
to one of these common, supposedly "safe," pesticides which are being dumped on
rural farm land and suburban lawns around the world. I think these "safe"
chemicals are the most dangerous. They get dumped in huge volumes which
increases profit.

(I wonder if there are any neighborhood bee keepers?)

Why are dandlions so awful that our parks, waterways, and ecosystems need to be
drenched with these chemicals? Thanks for speaking up! Sam and I walked right
into it this morning.

Glenn
