Hi

Well  yes raccoons can be cute, especially the little  ones.  They are also
fierce, nasty and can carry rabies.  They will get into and tear your trash
apart, in the summer if you have one of those above-ground put together
pools they'll tear them up.  They'll leave lovely piles of very stinky
"thank-yous" when they're done.  My roommate and I were literally chased
(screaming like girls) up the front steps of the house by a LARGE male
raccoon.  They move fast! also do this weird growl/snarl thing and bare
their teeth.  Not something you want your first-grader to ever run into.

If at  night, depending on where you live, you hear weird noises - not cats
meowing or squirrels - raccoons make a pretty distinctive sound, you can
just hold her up to the window and let her look out at them.  But if I were
you I wouldn't go outside to try to get closer.
