It is indeed disturbing, but are we sure that the gang and the victim did  
not know each other previously and there was some grudge involved?
 
It seems like odd behavior for a mugging or a robbery.....  no mention  of 
belongings taken or dragging the victim around to use his ATM card..... more 
 like a vengeful beat up and a knee shooting.
 
Just my ten cents
