I hope our stronger, more civic minded neighbors remember to clear curbs and the storm drains at the corner(s) of their blocks.It would be great if water flowed down channels into the drains instead of re-icing when the sun goes down.The truly compassionate, who can do the work without harming their backs, can help by clearing paths for their elderly neighbors. Shoveling the handicap ramps, and paths between homes and streets helps bikers and anyone with limited mobility.Today's sun and elevated temperatures did a good job melting a lot of the snow. City regs say sidewalk paths must be at least 30" wide. 36" is better if you have a neighbor using a wheel chair, or families with small children that like to walks side-by-side. Also, please remember that when car wipers are on, lights must be on.I can't tell you how many invisible cars passed me when I was out doing essential errands on Sunday.Even when wipers are not on, snow covered cars on snow covered roads are hard to spot, so... lights, while moving, might be a good idea for the next few days. For safety, this is a good time to clear ice and snow from the roof and hood of your car.Once it freezes up, it will be hard to remove, and if it flies off while you are driving, it could cause an accident or harm a pedestrian. For the protection of your home basement, this is also a good time to go out and clear alley and yard drains. Any water removed today, will not be around to become clogging ice tonight. Please pardon duplicates, but I've passed some enormous corner side puddles today, and more of my neighbors get to hear the satisfying sound that a sudden rush of water makes as it falls down a newly opened storm drain.
