I spoke to Alan at Monarch Hardware this a.m. L&I and fire dept. officials
were there to look at the buildling. According to him, the apartments upstairs
are pretty much a loss. Saad sustained at least water damage, and the hardware
store smells badly of smoke but nothing worse than that. He wasn't sure of the
extent of damage yet, but said that as far as he knew, everyone got out safely
(though we did see one person being wheeled on a gurney toward an ambulance at
45th & Locust). I was told last night that firemen did remove some animals
from the building, so hopefully this time all the people and all the animals
made it out okay.

about what to do if someone's pet is missing....

All I could find was this blurb on the City Kitties website:

"Tonight a 2-alarm blaze burned an 18-unit apartment building at 45th & Walnut.
If you are missing pets from this fire, please contact the PSPCA immediately to
report them missing: 267-385-3800. In Philadelphia, the PSPCA houses all
animals at ACCT (animal control)"

I, too, am looking for more info.

Does anyone have any more information on this event? What burned? What was
with the unusually heavy police presence? There was a squad car at every
intersection for blocks around. I also saw ambulances tearing down towards
Penn hospital.

There is a fire burning at 45th and Walnut. One person was dragged
from the fire and handcuffed by police.
