Hi neighbors-- I have a small backyard on 48th Street with a large (18 cubic feet) compost bin <http://westphillytools.org/node/5364>. Last year, a few friends asked me whether they could use my compost bin and I said sure. Soon, word spread and within a month, there were 20-30 families using the compost bin. There was a steady stream of folks bringing their compost to my backyard. This was great. But it also overwhelmed my bin and, after a time, I had to put a stop to it.
Recently, several people have started asking me whether they can use my bin again. It occurs to me that there is an incredible need for community composting. And, until we get curbside composting like San Francisco, this seems like something we might have to & can take on ourselves. So my question: (1) are there any community composting sites in our neighborhood that I can refer folks to? (2) if not, does anyone own or have access to a space in the neighborhood big enough that we might build a bin? If someone offers the space, I'll take care of constructing the bin & laying out the policies & rules, etc. thanks, Michael.
