I've seen an abundance of writings about bullying and detecting signs of bullying in a child.
But when are we going to discuss the admiration of bullying that defines our adult society?
Children can learn human values from adults and the larger society, or they can learn that bullying and abuse of power is the proper way to succeed in life. We have largely insisted that a winner take all society is the only modern value that matters. And yes, the kids do get the real lessons from the adults.
We teach them that people outside of their gangs are "prostitutes, gang members, and drug addicts." We teach teens that victims of predator drones in poor countries can be labeled as terrorists.
Then, we wonder why "good children" learn to be relentless bullies against peers who have some perceived weakness. We believe we can instill the values of bullying in children, and then give some half-assed intervention to keep them from getting caught as adults attempt to do.
Let's not separate bullying among children from the core values of the adult world, and continue to wallow in our own ignorance.
