Kimm touched on expected standards for journalists in her excellent letter confronting Tony West.

I was reading this report about the lies and propaganda around the illegal war on Libya. I came across these written professional standards for journalists, for those of you who wish to evaluate FOCP leaders and Tony West's standards of journalism. (The contradictions remind me of reading Penn's written Guidelines on Open Expression while they were still hosting the censored listserv, ucneighbors)

Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics Preamble, stating:

"....public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the
foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further
those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive
account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all
media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness
and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a
   journalist's credibility."

In addition, the Radio-Television News Directors Association Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct stresses public trust, credibility, accuracy, truth, "reporting anything known to be false," avoiding bias, fairness, integrity, independence, accountability, and meeting their "responsibility to the profession of electronic journalism."

Clearly major media reporting fails on all counts, serving power at the expense of principle and honor, performing like lapdogs, not providers of real news, information and analysis.
