The whole west philly vs university city thing pisses me off - they are two
very distinct areas (even if UC is in West Philly). And really, if you're going
to complain about new names, shouldn't we be calling it Blockley (Lenapehoking
being the entire Delaware and Hudson basin)?

I was born here and have lived here all my life except for a couple college
years, and I still don't know many of the things on Wilma's list!
Although it did take me a few years to start calling it USP, and I still refer
to the Tavern.

You all realize if Liz used "University City" or something instead of "West
Philly" people would be crying out, "No, it's West Philly - University City is
a marketing scheme!" and then arguing about the boundaries of University City
versus West Philly. (Anyway, it is Lenapehoking - West Philly is colonialism)

Given Philly Mag's largely suburban readership, is it so bad to provide a short
list of quirky and fun things about the area? The same magazine ran an article
last year where the author (not Liz) said that when out-of-towners ask him
about nice places in Philly - he leaves out the ENTIRE WEST PHILLY REGION.

Here is a list of West Philly
Neighborhoods:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Philadelphia_neighborhoods#West_Philadelphia

Perhaps you all could go through and flag all the ones that aren't "real" West
Philly? Because I get the feeling by the time it's done, all we'll be left with
is Cobbs Creek and maybe one or two others.

Liz's picture seems UCD-approved.
By the way, my personal one is you are from West Philly if you have heard of
the pharmacy college but never heard of USP (née Philadelphia College of
Pharmacy). I work at USP, so I run into this a lot.

You're right Jim. I guess the point I was trying to make is Liz's depiction
seemed to me a very limited perspective that suggested a more stilted,
contrived, planned version of whar she thinks West Philly is that does not call
to mind West Philly to some of us.

I live on 45 th St. near Pine. Did you know that actor Peter Boyle grew up on
51st St. near Black Oak Park?

Of course Al diPalma is long gone and Murray's is in Narberth but many of
things I listed are still here.

Thanks for writing.
