Yeah... But how many "true" West Philadonians remember the big torchlight protest against the plans for the grotesque University of Pennsylvania Library (now the Fisher Fine Arts Library) designed by Frank Furness -- which everyone said would ruin our lovely bucolic streetscape? As I recall, some folks wanted to have the area declared a historic district so they could prevent this ugly pile of sandstone from actually being built. But the district nomination was shouted down by a bunch of scare-mongering philistine bezonian barbarians and ... well, the rest is history and Walnut Street has never been the same.
