If I were told to choose and celebrate either a firing squad or a hang
man, I'd choose not to be killed. So called "education reformers" tell
us that public education must be destroyed, and demand either vouchers,
charter schools or both. But the death of public education is accepted
as a divine truth as they battle over the noose or gun.
Wilma's previous criticism of charters is completely correct.
I've included a release from the PA House below with a quote about
Roebuck's support for charter schools. So I don't think we have any
local candidates who support a system of real public education with
professional teachers. Williams, Muhammad, and Roebuck can fight over
the privatization methods, while we all accept that public education
must die.
People interested in public education and democracy need to read this
report about money and the propaganda campaign behind charters and
vouchers. There are a great many important points to consider in this
report. As the hope for democracy dies, I hope people will consider
why I don't see any difference between the right wingers and the so
called liberal democrats regardless of race and religion.
"...most ed reformers have benefitted from branding themselves as
progressives or "lifelong Democrats" ("I love labor unions---just not
teachers' unions"). This has given them credibility with liberals who,
like most voters, haven't paid close attention to the content and
results of the ed reforms. The labeling has always been a ruse, but the
politicking reformers have obliterated dividing lines: they work in
local and state campaigns alongside corporate free-marketers and
right-wing social conservatives who've long and openly supported
privatizing public education, ending social programs, and eviscerating
labor unions. In practice, they are one team."

"I support charter and cyber charter schools. Today there are nearly
50,000 students attending 135 charter schools and 12 cyber charter
schools. More than half of all charter schools are located in the
Philadelphia School District. I fully expect the number of charter and
cyber charter schools will continue to increase. As public schools, I
welcome their contributions to our public school system."
