"Over the last thirty years, in parallel with deregulation and the rising power of money in American politics, significant portions of American academia have deteriorated into "pay to play" activities."

Here is a book excerpt about the corruption of "experts" from powerful tax exempt universities.

I've previously described on the list how the attack against public education and teachers was exactly the same as the attack against social services and social workers in the 1990s decade. Using the pretext of expert evaluation and catching lazy practitioners, universities gave cover to a process of devaluing professionals into technicians. Workloads were doubled and paper work burdens exploded to sabotage the meager interventions for veterans with PTSD and all the problems associated with poverty. (e.g. substance addiction, homelessness, untreated psych problems etc.)

In my own area of research, I saw that academia supported endless pharmaceutical treatments for substance abuse, while working tirelessly against funding interventions, which were enormously successful by treating patients holistically with professional people to people interventions. They used their idiotic, pathetic, simplistic research about costs and benefits to justify the corporate agenda. These great men and women never allowed reasonable trials to prove that people can return to society if the front line workers are empowered to help them!

Universities no longer have much to do with the public good, but have everything to do with corporate agendas and the age of massive bullshit!
